Portfolio

In my portfolio I think that the paper on American Literature shows my best work. But the paper that needs the most work is the one about father and daughter relationships. I really think I need to give more examples and add more to each paragraph that I already have. On my American literature essay it shows my best work because it is something that I have a strong feeling for and was able to write a lot about.

Surviving

I think that if Chris had survived he would have contacted his parents. But I also think his view on life would not have changed and he still would have been very distant from his family. He was so passionate for how he felt he should live his life and I don't think him almost dying would have changed that. I also don't think he would go back to school, but I do think he would have tried to find a job and continue living on his own.

Research Paper

I will be writing about The Brady Bunch and how it had an effect on the development of the "normal" American Family. This show is different from other shows that involve a family because it isn't the typical, white picket fence picture. It shows that no family portrays that perfect image and that there are always parts of a family that are Dysfunctional in some way. This is very relevant to today because it relates to all families.

Patricia Hampl's Purpose

I think the purpose for the author to write this was to show that without being able to describe what you are writing about and give specific detail there is no meaning to the writing. If you were to just pick a random topic and give no skill in describing in detail, what is the point of writing in the first place.

Comparing Walt McCandless and Krakauer

Yes I think it was a good idea because I think it gave purpose to why Krakauer was really writing about Chris's life and gave us insight to how he was able to compare himself to the character. It forced me to try to find similarities between my and life and Chris's and helped change my opinion toward the novel. After reading farther into the book I realized that Chris really was doing sometime that made him feel successful and accomplished. My opinion completely changed from thinking Chris was crazy to being inspired from his actions.

I think the video was the most effective and definitely kept my attention the most. The fast moving images made me want to keep watching and was a much more interesting way to present an aspect of rhetoric. After watching the video in class, I wish I would have picked a video instead of the post secret option. I would have still used the same ideas I used for post secret, but using a video would have been much more effective.

Favorite Song

I don't have one song that I can call my favorite, but the one artist that means a lot to me is the Dave Matthews Band. My dad took me to my first DMB concert my 8th grade year and listening to their music will always remind me of him. Since my dad is basically my best friend, having a specific band that I can listen to that will always makes me think of him really means a lot.

Egos, Logos, Pathos

All three forms of rhetoric, in my opinion, play an equal role while presenting an argument. One providing only a single form would never keep my attention. Personally I find logos most useful because I am the type of person who noticed facts in what I am reading right away. I will believe facts over emotion.

Hitchhiking

My parents traveled around the world before I was born and hitchhiking was something they were able to do daily. But times have changed and I definitely believe that it has become very dangerous. I would never be comfortable picking up a random person and if I was in need for a ride, I would never consider hitchhiking. There are a lot of messed up people out there and I'm not willing to risk my safety to give a ride or receive one from Mr. random.

Gallien Responce

I think that Gallien saw how passionate Chris was to go out and live on his own for a while. He knew that even if he had called the police there was no way it would stop Chris from going. Of course he was worried and knew it was completely dangerous and insane, but I believe he respected Chris's determination. There for he helped as much as he could and then let Chris walk off into the wild.

Me

My name is Abbey Chapman and I am from a small town called Everson about 10 minutes north of Bellingham. I am a freshman here at WSU and am taking classes for both interior design and Apparel Merchandising. English in high school was very easy for me and I never really had to work for a good grade. But I know, since I'm in college, it will take quite a bit more effort. Doing well in school is very important to me but I love my social life as well. I love sports and have been playing them since I could walk, and snowboarding is almost all I do on the weekends during the winter.
